HONG KONG

The protests in Hong Kong seem to arise from a complete lack of faith in the government to have any concern for the people and a real fear amongst the young that the future holds anything good. All the old systems seem to be breaking down.

After months of peaceful protests, and after repeated, excessive use of force by police, the protesters deserted to more extreme measures.

It’s one thing to speak of “police” or “protesters” and another to talk about a policeman or a protester. The layers of complexity and nuance are as numerous as the particles of dust which remain in the streets after the tear gas canisters have been fired.

The people here seem mostly to stand with the protesters simply in the fundamental resilience of the Hong Kong people to deal with the disruptions caused by the protests with patience and determination.

The grit and determination of the young people in the movement, their ability to adapt and overcome and keep n going despite incredible odds in nothing sort of breathtaking.

In the midst of what sometimes feels like a war zone, protesters will help an old lady across the street and make sure she gets safely home, volunteers risk their lives to make and serve delicious hot food on besieged campuses.

There is a politeness and decency here, a fundamental goodness. The young people of Hong Kong are fighting with their whole heart and that is a force that must be reckoned with if there is to be a future for Hong Kong and China together.
